‘I will not tolerate stealing.’ Master Jones glared at the crew. ‘You’re all aware of the need to ration food. You receive enough to enable you to carry out your duties, and must make do with that. Anyone caught helping themselves will be punished. Master Clarke, please proceed.’

Master Clarke cleared his throat. ‘Daniel Parker, I hereby declare that you will be tied to the mast for the rest of the watch, followed by five lashings.’

Jed blanched. He knew the pain from being tied to the mast. The added effect of the lashings was unimaginable. ‘Master Jones, may I speak, sir?’

‘No, Jed. Nothing you can say will help him.’

‘But—’

‘No.’

Master Clarke stepped forward. ‘We are heading towards dangerous territory. You must be able to trust each other with your lives, not just your rations. I assure you that discipline will be maintained.’ He nodded to the boatswain, a man who had become more of a bully since Jasper’s demise.

The boatswain grinned and grasped Daniel by the arm, shoving him towards the centre of the deck.

Jed spent the rest of the morning with the physician. ‘Don’t you think the punishment is excessive for the crime?’ he said.

‘It’s not for us to judge. We must not interfere with the running of the ship.’

‘But Daniel’s so young. Surely if he’s sorry, a lesser punishment would do?’

Doctor Fuller squinted at a document, following the words with a gnarled finger. He paused his reading. ‘This is probably Daniel’s first time at sea. He won’t make such a mistake again.’

‘Would a passenger earn a similar punishment?’

‘That would be the governor’s decision. Stealing is a sin, so he’d want something done about it.’

The conversation switched to medical matters, and Jed spent many hours quenching his thirst for knowledge.
